2017 Rowan College of Communication and Creative Arts Secondary Ceremony

PARADOXES.

YOU ARE PROBABLY HAPPY TO BE FINISHING, BUT POSSIBLY SAD TO LEAVE AND PROBABLY FEARFUL OF WHAT'S NEXT.

YOU MIGHT SEE GRADUATION REPRESENTING A NEW TYPE OF INDEPENDENCE OR PERHAPS TYING YOU TO A NEW KIND OF GRIND.

HERE'S ANOTHER PARADOX.

FOR THE PAST 2 OR 4 OR MORE YEARS, WE IN THE ACADEMY HAVE ASKED YOU TO SPEAK UP, TO SAY WHAT'S ON YOUR MIND, TO SHOW US WHAT YOU LEARNED, TO BE ACTIVE PARTICIPANTS IN ACADEMIC CONVERSATIONS AND ACTIVITIES.

AND THEN ON THIS CULMINATING DAY, WE WHO CLAIM LECTURING AS OLD FASHIONED, OUTDATED, WE TAKE THIS ONE LAST TIME TO TALK AT YOU.

WE OPEN UP YOUR HEADS AND POUR IN OUR WORDS OF WISDOM.

WE REVERT TO BEING SAGES ON THE STAGE, RATHER THAN GUIDES AT YOUR SIDE.

LITERAL.

YOU LISTEN, YOU LEARN.

YOU WALK AWAY CHANGED PEOPLE.

OR NOT.

BUT YOU WILL REMEMBER THE BAD AS FROM TOM STATHAKES.

WE REVERT TO TALKING AT YOU, FILLING YOU WITH CLICHE PHRASES ABOUT モOPPORTUNITY,ヤ モRESPONSIBILITY,ヤ AND モMAKING A DIFFERENCE.

ヤ WE TALK ABOUT モJOURNEYS,ヤ モCAPACITIES FOR GREATNESS,ヤ AND THAT SOON TO BE ARRIVING FUTURE.

YES, WE SAY IT THAT WAY.

THE FUTURE.

WE SAY THAT LIKE THE WEATHER, TODAY IS A BRIGHT DAY, FULL OF HOPE AND PROMISE.

OH SURE, WE ALLOW YOU TO EXPRESS YOUR INDIVIDUALITYラBY STANDING AND WHOOPING WHEN CALLED UPON, TOSSING YOUR TASSELS IN UNISON, AND I THINK WE MUST HAVE DONE THAT BEFORE.

FIRST TIME EVER.

INSTEAD OF DEATH BY A THOUSAND CLICHES.

BECAUSE WHILE WE ARE NAMED THE COLLEGE OF COMMUNICATION AND CREATIVE ARTS, WE ARE REALLY THE COLLEGE OF STORYTELLING.

WHETHER IT IS A PIECE OF SCULPTURE OR A PAINTING OR SOME OTHER WORK OF ART, WHETHER IT IS AN ADVERTISEMENT OR A PRESS RELEASE, A SCHOLARLY WORK OR A MAGAZINE ARTICLE; A FILM, A TV OR RADIO SEGMENT, A POEM OR NOVEL, A SHORT STORY OR A NEWS STORY WHATEVER IT IS THAT YOU CREATE AS PART OF CCCA, YOU ARE TELLING A STORY.

YOU ARE A STORYTELLER.

LET ME TELL YOU AN ABBREVIATION OF MY STORY.

IT IS A STORY FILLED WITH MISTAKES, RISK-TAKING, AND GOOD LUCK.

AS A SENIOR IN HIGH SCHOOL, I APPLIED TO ONE COLLEGE.

I DON'T THINK I'M ALLOWED TO NAME THAT COLLEGE AT A ROWAN CEREMONY.

FORTUNATELY, THAT COLLEGE ADMITTED ME.

NOW YOU CAN GET A FANTASTIC EDUCATION AT ANY UNIVERSITY.

OR YOU CAN GET A POOR ONE.

THE CHOICE IS YOURS.

MY CHOICE WAS TO GET A MEDIOCRE EDUCATION.

WELL, THE EDUCATION WAS ACTUALLY PRETTY AMAZING.

IT WAS ME WHO WAS MEDIOCRE.

I DID NOT GRADUATE SUMMA CUM LAUDE.

I DID NOT GRADUATE MAGNA CUM LAUDE, I DID NOT GRADUATE SUMMA CUM LAUDE.

I WAS NOT EVEN LAUDE.

I WAS LAUDED BY NO ONE.

I PARTICIPATED IN NO CLUBS, NO SPORTS, AND MY EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES WERE UNOFFICIAL, IF NOT UNEVENTFUL.

I MAJORED IN ENGLISH LITERATURE DUE TO FINANCIAL CONSTRAINTS NECESSITATING THAT I GRADUATED IN THREE YEARS.

AND ENGLISH SEEMED TO BE THE MOST OBTAINABLE DEGREE WHEN I HAD TO MAKE THE DECISION TO MAJOR IN SOMETHING, ANYTHING.

ON MY WAY OUT THE DOOR, I DECIDED TO ATTEND GRADUATE SCHOOL IN CALIFORNIA.

I LASTED ALL OF SIX WEEKS.

I THEN DECIDED TO BECOME A HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER.

TO GET MY CERTIFICATION, I WAS REQUIRED TO TAKE EDUCATION AND ADDITIONAL ENGLISH COURSES.

WHILE DOING THIS I APPLIED TO BECOME A RESEARCH ASSISTANT FOR ONE OF MY PROFESSORS AND, THEN SOMEHOW ENDED UP TEACHING AT THE UNIVERSITYラA TWENTY-TWO-YEAR-OLD COLLEGE INSTRUCTOR TEACHING EIGHTEEN-YEAR-OLD FRESHMEN HOW TO WRITE.

DURING THAT TIME, I FINISHED MY MASTER'S AND APPLIED TO PHD PROGRAMS.

YES, PLURAL.

THIS TIME, I WAS MORE STRATEGIC AND SPREAD THE APPLICATION WEALTH TO FOUR SCHOOLS.

ALL LET ME IN.

NONE OFFERED ME MONETARY SUPPORT.

FINALLY, ENOUGH PEOPLE TURNED ONE OF THOSE PLACES DOWN.

AND THEY OFFERED ME A TEACHING ASSISTANTSHIP.

DECISION MADE.

IT TOOK ME ONLY SEVEN YEARS TO FINISH MY PH.

D.

INCLUDING A TWO YEAR DETOUR TO GERMANY.

EVEN BY ATTENDING COMMENCEMENT, YOU ARE FAR AHEAD OF ME.

I DID NOT GO TO ANY OF MY THREE COLLEGE GRADUATIONS.

ONE SATURDAY, I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY WHEN THE RADIO ANNOUNCER CONGRATULATED THE GRADUATES ON WHAT SPECTACULAR WEATHER THEY WERE HAVING ON GRADUATION DAY.

THIS WAS THE DAY I SHOULD HAVE BEEN RECEIVING MY MASTER'S, AND I WASN'T EVEN AWARE OF IT.

I HAVE SEARCHED FOR MANY JOBS, APPLIED FOR NUMEROUS AWARDS, RUN FOR MULTIPLE OFFICES AND POSITIONS.

I HAVE BEEN REJECTED AND LOST MORE TIMES THAN I CAN COUNT AND MORE TIMES THAN YOU WANT TO HEAR ABOUT.

I HAVE BEEN KICKED OUT OF COUNTRIES.

[APPLAUSE].

I HAVE BEEN TOLD I LACKED PASSION.

AND I HAVE BEEN ADVISED TO FIND A DIFFERENT CAREER.

SOMEWHERE IN THE MIDST OF ALL THIS, I FIGURED OUT WHAT I DID WELL.

I MET PEOPLE WHO BELIEVED IN ME AND WHAT I COULD ACCOMPLISH.

I FOUND MY PASSION.

TODAY I STAND BEFORE YOU, HONORED AND THRILLED TO SERVE AS DEAN OF THE COLLEGE OF COMMUNICATION AND CREATIVE ARTS.

PEOPLE GROW UP WANTING TO BE TEACHERS, FIRE FIGHTERS, ATHLETES, ASTRONAUTS.

FEW OF US FOLLOW OUR INTENDED PATHS.

OH, THERE IS THE BEACH BALL.

HEY.

ALL RIGHT.

FEW OF US FOLLOW THOSE INTENDED PATHS.

BUT STORIES HAPPEN.

YOUR STORY IS HAPPENING.

SO I WANT TO SHARE THIS WITH YOU, THOUGH IT WILL SOUND CLICHE.

YOU HAVE MADE IT THIS FAR.

AND IT IS FAR.

YOU HAVE ABSORBED AND YOU UNDERSTAND THE FOUNDATIONS OF SUCCESS.

YOU HAVE LEARNED MUCH.

YOU HAVE LEARNED PERSEVERANCE.

YOU HAVE LEARNED HOW TO THRIVE.

YOU MAY HAVE MISSED OUT ON OPPORTUNITIES.

YOU MAY NOT HAVE JOINED THOSE CLUBS, DONE AS WELL AS YOU COULD HAVE IN YOUR CLASSES, HAD A LITTLE TOO MUCH FUN WHILE IN COLLEGE.

YET, YOU HAVE MADE IT THIS FAR AND THERE IS MUCH MORE TO COME.

YOU HAVE AN UNFINISHED STORY WAITING TO BE LIVED.

LIVE YOUR STORY.

AND TELL IT WELL.

ROWAN UNIVERSITY'S COLLEGE OF COMMUNICATION AND CREATIVE ARTS' STORYTELLING CLASS OF 2017, I CONGRATULATE YOU.
